Introduction
This project is designed to test the lung capacity of various age groups.  It is important for doctors to know how much air each person needs in order to live.  I hope to learn of older or younger people have a greater lung capacity.

Problem
How does the age of a person affect their lung capacity?

Hypothesis
Eighteen to twenty-five year-olds have the greatest lung capacity.

Variables
Manipulated variable - age of person
            Responding variable - lung capacity
Constants - apparatus used to test, method of testing, number of times tested, method of breathing

Materials
  • Masking tape
  • 1 gallon glass jug with lid
  • measuring cup
  • 2 feet of aquarium tubing
  • marking pen
  • large plastic dishpan
  • drinking straw

Procedure:
  1. Place a strip of masking rape down the side of the glass jug.
  2. Use the measuring cup to add 16 cups of water into the jug, 1 cup at a time.  Use the marking pen to mark a line on the tape to indicate the height after each cup of water.
  3. Secure the lid on the jug.
  4. Fill the dishpan about half full of water.
  5. Place the jug upside down in the dishpan and remove the lid.
  6. While someone holds the jug, place about 4 inches of one end of the tubing into the mouth of the jug.
  7. Insert the drinking straw into the free end of the tubing to make a sanitary mouthpiece.
  8. Ask the first person to inhale deeply and force out all the air you can while blowing into the tubing.
  9. Use the scale on the judge to determine the amount of your exhaled breath.
  10. Repeat steps 7-9 four times with the same person.
  11. Repeat steps 7-10 with all people being tested.
