Purpose

Science is a hands-on class.  Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority for students, teachers and parents.  To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been developed and provided to you in this student safety contract.  These rules must be followed at all times.  Two copies of the contract are provided.  One copy must be signed by both you and a parent or guardian and will be kept on file.  The second copy is to be kept in your science notebook as a contract reminder of the safety rules.

General Behavior
  1. Follow all directions, both written and oral.  If you do not understand the directions, ASK.
  2. Show respect for the lab.  Never run, throw things, or play around in the science classroom.
  3. Never eat or drink from lab containers.
Dress Code and Cleanliness
  1. Wear protective clothing - goggles, aprons, gloves - as appropriate.
  2. Tie back long hair.
  3. Wash your hands after doing an investigation in which you handle chemical, living things, or once living things.
  4. Keep the science room clean and picked up.  Keep aisles clear.  Push your chair under the desk when not in use.
Waste Disposal
  1. Dispose of each type of waste as directed by your teacher.
  2. Never handle broken glass with your bare hands.  Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass.  Place broken glass in the broken glass container.
Working with Heat
  1. Understand how a heat source works before using it.
  2. Don't walk away from a heat source that is in use.
  3. Heat materials only in heat resistant containers
  4. Never heat a closed container
  5. Wear goggles and use mitts or tongs when handling hot materials.
Working with Chemicals
  1. Label containers before adding chemicals to them.  Never take a substance out of an unlabeled container.
  2. Do not smell chemicals directly.  Observe chemical odors by wafting, or fanning fumes toward your nose.
  3. Wash hands with soap and water after handling chemicals.
Working with Live or Once-Living Materials
  1. Wear gloves and goggles.
  2. Do not touch face or skin while handling materials.
  3. Wash hands with soap and water after handling living or once-living materials.
Working with Electricity
  1. Never submerge an electrical appliance in water.
  2. Position power cords so you don't trip over them.
  3. Position electrical appliances so they are not knocked over easily.
Working with Sharp Instruments
  1. Handle sharp instruments (knives, scalpels, and scissors) with care.
  2. Carry sharp instruments with tips and points pointing down and away.
  3. Always cut in a direction away from yourself and others.
Handling Emergencies
  1. In any emergency, immediately alert the adult in charge.  Move away from the site of the emergency.
  2. If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop and roll.  Do not run


Agreement

Dear Parent or Guardian: 


We feel that you should be informed regarding the school's effort to create and maintain a safe science classroom.  With the cooperation of the teacher, parents and students, a safety instruction program can eliminate, prevent and correct possible hazards.

 
You should be aware of the safety instructions your son/daughter will receive.  Please read the list of safety rules above.  This contract needs to be signed by both student and parent/guardian, and will be kept on file.

 
Your signature on this contract indicates that you have read this Middle School Contract, are aware of the measures taken to insure the safety of your son/daughter in the science classroom, and will instruct your son/daughter to uphold his/her agreement to follow these rules.
